Certified copies of non-genealogical vital records of all births, deaths, marriages/civil unions that occur within the Borough of Somerville are available from Somerville Vital Statistics.
As of May 1, 2012, the fee is $25.00 for the first certified copy and $2.00 for each additional certified copy of the same vital record. The fee is payable with cash, a money order or a check made out to the Somerville Division of Health. We do no accept credit or debit cards.
There is a $20.00 processing fee for corrections to any birth, marriage or death record that are submitted to the State Department of Vital Statistics and Registry (with the exception of registrar or hospital errors).
Somerville Vital Statistics complies with the requirements of the State Department of Vital Statistics and Registry regarding who is eligible to receive a certified copy of a vital record. You will need to fully identify the record and provide proof of your identity, current residence and, if appropriate, your relationship to the person listed on the vital record you are requesting.
Certificates can be obtained in person at the Somerville Municipal Building, located at 25 West End Avenue between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM Monday through Friday.
If you are requesting a certified copy through the mail, complete an application, photocopy your driver’s license with your current address, and include payment and a stamped self-addressed envelope with your request. Please do not send cash through the mail. Send all requests to Somerville Division of Health, 25 West End Avenue, Somerville, NJ 08876.
You can use VitalChek (www.vitalchek.com), a secure website to make an online request. An additional fee is charged by VitalChek for using this service, and all major credit cards are accepted, including American Express®, Discover®, MasterCard® or Visa®.

APPLICATIONS FOR MARRIAGE/CIVIL UNION are taken between 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday – Friday. You will need to bring:
Proof of current address. One of the applicants must be a Somerville resident as you must apply in the municipality where one of the applicants lives. If one applicant is from out of state, the other applicant must reside in Somerville. If both applicants live out of state, you can only apply in Somerville if the marriage/civil union will occur in Somerville and the license will only be valid in this municipality.
Government-issued proof of identity – valid driver’s license or passport.
If one or both were previously married, in a civil union or a domestic partnership, bring the final divorce decree, dissolution of civil union, legal termination of a domestic partnership or death certificate of previous partner.
A witness, 18 years of age or older, who has a valid government-issued proof of identity and understands English. If one or both applicants do not understand English, witness must know both languages.
$28.00 application fee by check, money order or exact cash.
Application becomes a valid license after 72 hours (3 days). Therefore, if the ceremony is to take place on a weekend, the very latest the applicants should come in would be the Tuesday before. For remarriages and reaffirmations, there is no waiting period.
Bride, groom or the witness can pick up the license after the waiting period.
Marriage/civil union arrangements (officiant and site) must be made by the applicants. The license will not be released from our office until these arrangements have been made.
The license will be filed in the municipality where the marriage/civil union occurs. A certified copy of the marriage certificate can be obtained there.
APPLICATIONS FOR DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP are taken between 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday – Friday.
