The Somerville Public Works Department consists of 16 full-time employees and is responsible for the maintenance of all Borough streets, parks, public facilities and the sanitary sewer systems.
Public Works provides the following services:

Tree Clipping Collection Program:
The Borough offers a year round tree clipping collection program.
Chipper routes are as follows:
- Monday: East end of town from Adamsville Rd. to Bridge Street
- Tuesday: West end of town from Cornell Blvd. to Bridg Street
- Friday: All areas South of Main Street and 2 developments off of North Gaston Ave.
All items must be placed at curb by 7:00am each morning to ensure pick-up.
Leaf Collection Program:
October 19th to December 18th for street pick up. Leafs can be placed in bags for pick up all year. Leaves must be bagged after December 19th or will not be collected.

Items to recycle curbside:
Newsaper: Newspapers must be bundled and tied with string or twine. Anything that comes with the newspaper can be recycled with the newspaper including: comics, TV/magazine sections, glossy coupons and colored food/store ads.
Other paper/junk mail: Other paper includes: Magazines, Catalogs, Writing/school paper, Phone books, All envelopes, Store fliers w/mailing labels, Paperback books, Office paper Copy paper,,Hardcover books with hard covers removed. Place in a brown paper bag and put next to your blue bucket. Please DO NOT include Metallic coated paper or paper plates and cups.
Corrugated Cardboard: Corrugated cardboard must be cut into squares of 2ft. x 2ft. and tied with string or twine. Brown paper bags are also acceptable. Place corrugated next to blue recycling bucket. Please DO NOT include chip board such as cereal boxes, pizza boxes, gift boxes, 12-pack boxes.
Commingled items: should be rinsed thoroughly. Please remove all lids, caps and closures and place inside the blue recycling bucket. Please include:
Glass Bottles and jars: (all colors)
Cans: including Steel and Bi-metal cans (soup/vegetable type cans) and Aluminum cans (soda and beer type cans)
Plastric Bottles: water, soda, milk, detergent and other plastic bottles with #1 or #2 inside a recycle triangle molded into the bottom of plastic containers. Bottle neck should be smaller than the body of the bottle. (PLEASE do not include motor oil, antifreeze bottles, toys, plastic bags, pesticide containers, pool chemical containers, plastic cups, plastic silverware, polystyrene cups, plates, trays, flower pots, beer balls, yogurt, margarine, butter containers, prescription containers.)
Batteries: Includes dry-cell batteries such as radio, toy, watch and calculator batteries. Place in sealed plastic zip-top bag and place inside your blue recycling bucket.
Textiles: Includes Clean Clothing, Nylon Curtains, Drapes, Towels, Sheets, Hats, Belts, Paired Socks, Paired Shoes Securely Tied Together . UNACCEPTABLE items include Wet Clothing, Rugs, Pillows, Plastic Foam-Backed Drapes. Place Textiles in waterproof bags. SEAL BAGS SECURELY to keep textiles clean and dry. Special textile recycling bags are available at your local municipal office and from the Somerset County Recycling Center (732-469-3363

Directions from Somerville
Take Route 22 East; go under the Route 287 overpass.
Make the first right onto Chimney Rock Road.
Go through 1st traffic light; bear right and continue on Chimney Rock Road.
Go straight through 2nd light; go to end of road (Polhemus Lane).
Recycling Center is located on right.
Items to Bring to the Recycling Center:
Newspaper, Magazines, Junk mail & other paper, Corrugated cardboard, Household batteries, Phone books, Glass bottles & jars, Plastic bottles (#1&2), Aluminum, steel & bi-metal cans, Textiles, Antifreeze, Scrap metal (anything made from metal except refrigerators or air conditioners), Used oil & oil filters, Passenger tires (Limit 8 with or without rims)
