Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program

The Borough of Somerville provides rental assistance to low-income families, the elderly and disabled through the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP). A qualifying family receives a housing voucher and the housing office pays the landlord a subsidy. For more information, see the Somerville Section 8 presentation.

Waiting list currently closed

We are not currently taking applications for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Assistance Payments Program. This is in accordance with the procedures outlined in the Borough’s administrative plan for the Section 8 Program.

We will announce when applications are being accepted again, when the current waiting list is reduced and there is a reasonable expectation that Section 8 housing units may be available.

Local preference

Only households with local preference at the time of the application will be considered. This means the applicant must live or work in the Borough of Somerville.

  • Proof of residency will be required at the time of the application and prior to acceptance on the waiting list
  • Applications will not be accepted without documentation, such as a driver’s license, lease, employment papers, or paystubs
  • If you do not meet these qualifications, you will not be allowed to complete an application

Eligibility

You are potentially eligible for Section 8 assistance if your gross annual income, by household size, is at or below:

  • $50,050 - 1 person
  • $57,200 - 2 persons
  • $64,350 - 3 persons
  • $71,450 - 4 persons
  • $77,200 - 5 persons
  • $82,900 - 6 persons

Please note that most applicants will not receive assistance anytime soon.

Property Owners

Please contact us if you are a property owner interested in participating in the Housing Choice Voucher Program. All units must meet minimum standards of health and safety. The Housing Authority conducts an initial inspection of each unit and then an annual inspection.
