The Borough of Somerville, Fire Department, is seeking applications for a Fire Maintenance Assistant. The position is full-time (40-hours per week), but we will consider part-time (20-hours per week) applicants.
The position assists in maintaining fire apparatus, equipment and other specialized vehicles that include, but are not limited to, pumpers, ladder trucks, and passenger vehicles used for emergencies, and all equipment commonly used for emergency service response. The candidate shall have the ability operate engines, connect lines and read monitors and hydraulic operational gauges.
Duties may include, but are not limited to: performing inventory, maintaining records, scheduling inspections, maintaining training records, conduct inspections, assist in the procurement of inventory and supplies, assist in the issuance of equipment, preparation of reports and mapping, assist in obtaining quotations.
The person must have the ability to skillfully and safely operate fire equipment, read and understand technical materials related to fire apparatus, understand and follow written and oral instructions, maintain reports on equipment. Position Description:

The position performs various support roles and assignment as needed for the Borough Fire Department under supervision. The person must be fully qualified to operate fire equipment and in addition must have the physical capability to perform labor work. The employee shall have the ability operate engines, connect lines and read monitors and hydraulic operational gauges. Duties may include but not limited to performing inventory, maintaining records, scheduling inspections, maintaining training records, conduct inspections, assist in the procurement of inventory and supplies, assist in the issuance of equipment, preparation of reports and mapping, assist in obtaining quotations. Position Qualifications:
The person shall have and maintain a New Jersey Driver’s License. The person shall possess the physical ability to perform the job which consists of having to use hands and arms, the ability to climb, balance, stoop and kneel and the ability to talk and hear and ability to see at close proximity. Heavy strength demands include exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50-100 pounds frequently, or from 20 up to 50 pounds constantly. Physical Demands: Continuously requires standing and vision. Frequently requires fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, handling, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, climbing, bending, hearing, and talking. Occasionally requires sitting, reaching, foot controls, balancing, crouching, and twisting. Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Hand tools, hydraulic, electric, cutting and air tools, test equipment, measuring devices, communication equipment, firefighting tools, breathing air compressor, welding equipment, light machine tools, diagnostic equipment, vehicles, fire apparatus, pumps, saws, fax, and copier. Computer Equipment and Software: Computer, mobile data terminal, Microsoft Office Suite, and any other associated software. Familiarity with Edmunds Financial System a plus or willingness to learn. Familiarity with Prime point attendance system or willingness to learn.
The position is a PERS position in a unionized environment under AFSCME.
Firefighting experience a plus.
Environment:
Working Conditions Overall Working Conditions: Satisfactory: Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Environmental Factors: Weekly exposure to extreme temperature and physical hazards. Monthly exposure to wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration. Frequent exposure to mechanical hazards. Occasional exposure to chemical hazards, electrical hazards, and fire hazards. Rare exposure to explosives and communicable diseases. Primary Work Location: Shop, Vehicle, and Outdoors (Fire Stations, road service calls, emergency incidents) Protective Equipment Required: Safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed shoes, hard hat, respirators, self contained breathing apparatus, welding hoods and welding gloves, and firefighting PPE. The work is performed regularly at a Fire House and within a Maintenance area located within a typical Fire House. The position would be mentored by the Superintendent of Maintenance with growth opportunities.
