Somerville construction projects

The Borough currently has several roadway and drainage improvement projects underway to enhance safety, pavement conditions, and stormwater management. Below is an overview of the ongoing work. Please note that all work is weather permitting.

Safe Routes to Transit project

Start: November 2025
Locations: 22 intersections (see list below)

Work has begun on the 2023 Safe Routes to Transit project, which focuses on improving accessibility by replacing ADA-compliant ramps and sidewalks at the following locations:

  • S. Bridge St and Franklin St
  • S. Bridge St and South St
  • South St and Division St
  • W. High St and Maple St
  • W. High St and Ross St
  • W. High St and Firehouse
  • W. High St and N. Doughty Ave
  • N. Doughty Ave and W. Cliff St
  • N. Doughty Ave and W. Summit St
  • N. Bridge St and W. Spring St
  • S. Bridge St and Holly Glen Rd
  • N. Bridge St and W. Young St

Altamont Place roadway improvements

Start: on or about November 3, 2025
Hours:
7 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday
Locations:
Altamont Place, from N. Middaugh St to Cornell Blvd

Phase 1: Installation of new drainage to collect stormwater from the sump and leader drains. In addition, select curbs, sidewalks, and driveway aprons will be replaced or repaired as needed. During working hours, the road will be closed to through traffic but will remain open to local residents and emergency vehicles.

Phase 2: Paving a new asphalt surface course. Prior to the start of this phase, residents will receive an additional notification letter with further details and instructions.

Lincoln Avenue improvement project

Start: on or about November 10, 2025
Hours: 7 am to 3:30 pm
Locations: Lincoln Avenue, Cleveland Street, Halsey Street

Phase 1: Installation of new storm drainage and catch basin, plus curb and sidewalk replacement at various locations.

  • During working hours, road will be closed to through traffic, but will always be accessible to residents and emergency vehicles.
  • Police will be on site to help with traffic flow.
  • If possible, plan an alternate route during construction.
  • Please obey all posted warning signage and use caution when driving through the work zone.

Phase 2: Milling and pavement resurfacing.

  • Work is scheduled to occur in the spring 2026.
  • Residents will receive an additional notice letter with further details and instructions.
