Beginning in January, PSE&G will continue working on the gas main construction project, on Division Street and West Main Street. On Division Street, PSE&G will replace 435 feet of gas main and 15 gas service connections. On West Main Street, PSE&G will replace approximately 1,450 feet of gas main and about 45 gas service connections between Maple Street and North Doughty Avenue.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) has approved construction from January through March. PSE&G expects all work to be completed by May 2026.
Downtown Somerville will remain open during construction, with parking available in municipal lots.
Detour and traffic information
- Work on West Main Street will occur primarily overnight, from 8 pm to 5 am.
- West Main Street will be closed between North Bridge Street and Doughty Avenue during overnight work hours
- Traffic will be detoured via Veterans Memorial Drive and West High Street.
- Please follow all posted No Parking signs.

- West Main Street: Overnight work, from 8 pm to 5 am
- Division Street: Daytime work hours. Specific times will be announced.
Construction plan
All dates are tentative. PSE&G will provide weekly construction updates, which will be posted on the Borough website.
Division Street schedule
- January 5: Start preparing service openings
- January 12: Insert the gas main and transfer services
Construction on Division Street is expected to take approximately 3 to 4 days. Pedestrian access will be limited during active construction. Final paving will occur after a 90-day settlement period. Restoration work is expected to take approximately 5 days.
West Main Street schedule
- January 5: Begin gas main installation. This work will occur overnight and will include a DOT-approved detour.
- January 21: Begin gas service replacements
- Work within the roadway will be completed overnight and a detour will be in place
- Work behind the curb will be done during the day with traffic lane shifts
- March 31: Construction expected to be complete.
- May 2026: Final milling and paving scheduled.
Resident and business coordination
PSE&G will schedule gas service appointments directly with affected residents and property owners.

PSE&G began gas system modernization work in Somerville in 2022. Since then, the company has completed 12.9 miles of gas main replacement and about 1,500 service replacements.
