You may have noticed some recent changes along the Peters Brook Greenway path in the Van Fleet Gardens, between Grove Street and N. Bridge Street. These updates are part of a new habitat restoration project, led by the Environmental Commission and funded by a $20,000 grant from Sustainable Jersey and the PSEG Foundation.
About the project
The first phase of the Peters Brook Greenway Riparian Restoration Project began on August 14, 2025, with site preparation at the stream overlook. Over the next 18 months, we’ll be transforming the area to create welcoming spaces for both people and wildlife.
Summer 2025 | Fall 2025 | Spring 2026 | Fall 2026
Stream overlook (Phase 1) | Enhance stream access with a viewing area, native plantings for beauty and erosion control, a pathway extension, wildflower meadow conversion, and a visitor bench. | Wildflower planting in October. Watch for blooms in the spring! | Native plantings on the bank and plateau to stabilize the slope (after invasive species removal).
Shrub allee (Phase 2) |
Start planting a row of specimen shrubs to add diversity, support winter birds, and beautify the trail.
Shaded grove (Phase 3) | Start working on a stream access point with native wildflowers, grasses, and sedges.
Pocket meadow (Phase 4) | Site preparation for a wildflower meadow at the street entrance, creating a haven for butterflies and pollinators. | Start planting wildflowers. |
