Garbage collection guidelines and schedule
Your garbage is picked up weekly. The day of the week depends on where you live.
Schedule
View this map to find out what day of the week is your garbage collection day.
Garbage is not collected on the weekends, except to make up for weather delays.
Time
Garbage collection is from 7 am to 6:30 pm.
Holidays
Garbage is not picked up on:
- New Year's Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
If garbage collection is cancelled due to a holiday or poor weather conditions, it will be picked up the next day.
Garbage preparation
- All garbage must be drained of liquids before disposal.
- Put non-recyclable broken glass in a secure, rigid container.
- Ashes are not allowed in the trash.
Garbage cans
Each household may place up to four trash containers per pickup. Extra items need a bulk pickup sticker.
- Property owners or tenants must provide their own containers.
- Containers must be made of plastic.
- Containers must be 96 gallons or smaller.
- A filled container must weigh no more than 70 pounds.
- Containers must have a lid and two sturdy handles.
- Containers must work with automated refuse collection.
Check the municipal code for more solid waste rules.
Small yard waste
You may place grass clippings in paper bags with your regular garbage. These bags count toward your 4-bag limit. For pickup, call (908) 704-7195.
Large items
Large appliances and metal items (such as refrigerators, stoves, beds, and crates) are not collected with regular garbage. Learn about how to buy bulk pickup stickers.
If your garbage is not picked up
If your garbage was not picked up on it's scheduled day, it might be because:
- Container weighed over 70 lbs
- More than 4 containers were placed at the curb
- Leaves, branches, or yard waste were in the container
- Recyclable materials were in the container
- It's a holiday
- Poor weather conditions
