The Somerville Environmental Commission organizes community initiatives to help protect the local environment.
- Join the Somerville Green Team: The Somerville Green Team puts sustainable initiatives into action. The Green Team is dedicated to making our town more sustainable and resilient, and spearheads hands-on projects like tree plantings, waste reduction initiatives, and green infrastructure improvements. A key focus is supporting the Jay Scott Community Garden, where we help expand access to fresh, locally grown food. Through community engagement and action, we empower residents to create a greener, healthier Somerville. If you are interested in joining the Green Team, please email Rebecca Reitman at RReitman2@gmail.com or sign up for our newsletter,
- Home Energy Efficiency Assessments: Save money and improve the comfort, health, and safety of your home by participating in one of PSE&G’s energy savings programs. There are tailored options and incentives available for all community members—including both homeowners and renters—regardless of your income level. For more information, visit EnergyOutreachNJ.com/Somerville and schedule your Home Energy Assessment today!
- Residential Street Trees: The commission offers a free Street Tree program for residents, where we use developers’ funding to purchase and plant trees at no cost to homeowners. We have a significant waiting list, however please feel free to add your contact information here if you would like to be considered in the future.
- The Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Historic Sites: The EC has a close relationship with Somerville’s own colonial historic sites, and is helping advise on some upcoming environmental improvements. Stay tuned via the EC Newsletter for additional information about the exciting renovations taking place for the country’s 250th anniversary next year.
