The Downtown Somerville Alliance (DSA) plays music on speakers along Main Street throughout the year. The regular schedule is:

Underground electric, gas, communications and water lines are everywhere, even on private property. NJ state law requires that anyone digging must call 1-800-272-1000 or 811, so that operators can markout underground utilities. You must call at least 3 days before any digging project, such as installing, removing or replacing:

• additions
• new gardens

A moving permit is not required if you’re moving to Somerville. Please reach out to the Fire Marshal’s office to confirm if a fire inspection is required.

The mayor will perform marriage and civil union ceremonies at Borough Hall. The fee is $285 and payment is required in advance.

A Permit to Work with the Roadway is required for road openings associated with utility installations and maintenance and for road improvements.

There are several food banks, pantries and soup kitchens open to Somerset County residents, including these locations in Somerville:

• Home of Somerset County: Provides emergency shelter, meals and other programs for at-risk families
• Little Food Pantries: Contact the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at 908-685-1660 for the locations of small food lockers in Somerville
• Wednesday – Soup Kitchen: The Samaritan Homeless Interim Program (SHIP) hosts a soup kitchen from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, at the United Reformed Church (100 West Main Street). They also provide a food pantry and emergency meal vouchers at 87 E. High Street.
• Friday – Food Boxes: The The Somerville YMCA (2 Green Street) provides emergency food boxes or  despensas de alimentos from 9 am to 2 pm on Fridays
• Saturday – Food Bank: The Food Bank Network of Somerset County hosts a food bank from 9 am to 11 am, on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, at the United Reformed Church (100 West Main Street)

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has a list of organizations that are looking for donations of appliances, reusable shopping bags, furniture, clothing and many other household items.

If your garbage was not picked up on it’s scheduled day, it might be because:

• Container weighed over 35 lbs
• More than 4 containers were placed at the curb
• Leaves, branches, or yard waste were in the container

• It’s a holiday

• Mix equal parts kitty litter with old paint
• Wait for the kitty litter to absorb the paint

Somerset County no longer accepts latex or acrylic paint at Household Hazardous Waste Collection events. Only oil-based paint is accepted.
